Siddharth Krishnamurthy, PhD Candidate in Virology/Immunology

The more I study viruses and become a “virologist”, the less I understand what that moniker means. The reality is that most scientists who study viruses (or what many people call, “virologists”) can be classified as other types of biologists (in fact, many might not even consider themselves virologists), such as immunologists, structural biologists, hepatologists etc. Because of the diverse fields “virologists” span, there are multiple routes to enter the field of virology. Additionally, I think it would be disingenuous of me to say that my goal was to be a virologist starting as early as high school. I did not plan my virology career trajectory when I was 14; rather, my (starting) career in virology has been the result of an iterative refinement of my career goals over time. However, this question specifically asks for the specific path of the respondant. Therefore, with these caveats, I will talk about my own path (which started 12 years ago (God, I’m old) and add commentary with how I would approach this today….
